Join Frozen Events as we present the Frozen Feet Run on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at Elm Creek Park.

ABOUT FROZEN FEET 

The Frozen Feet Run is a on-snow winter trail run at Elm Creek Park in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Regular racers can choose between running a 5k, 10k, or half marathon.

It’s a unique run because, while there are many 5k’s/10k’s/halfs, there are very few that are held on snow and trails. The course is packed, but there is no guarantee that there won’t be extra snow on top. Runners can use their regular shoes or opt for snowshoes…it’s up to you!

COURSES

The entire course is groomed/packed singletrack. Thanks to the local group of mountain bikers who are the grooming crew, the course is very well maintained. The course grooming begins after the first snow and continues all winter.

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO THEM HERE

Additionally, the local group, as well as many fatbike riders throughout the city, help to keep the snow packed and in good rideable condition. However, you should be aware that snow and weather conditions that are best for running can change drastically from day to day. Therefore, the course condition really depends on the snow and temperature. Be ready for all conditions!

TRAIL CONDITIONS

The trail conditions are regularly updated and can be monitored at theMORC website, if you would like to read what people who have recently ridden the trail say about the current conditions. We will also have the Frozen 40 Forecast, where not only the weather but also the trail conditions are covered in great detail.

This information should provide a good idea of what you can expect for the run. If you’ve never run on snow covered trails, you should expect a variety of conditions – from concrete-hard to mushy to powdery deep snow to icey/crusty snow. The conditions are very dependent on the weather, temperature, and sun. You should be ready for every type of weather.

Venue/Course Location

DO NOT go to the main entrance and chalet. The Elm Creek singletrack trail is located away from the main park entrance and main chalet. A good source of directions can be found at the Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists page, here.

Directions

From the Minneapolis metro, head north on 169 past 494. The main trailhead is at approximately 1827 W Hayden Lake Rd, Champlin, MN(this isn’t a real address; it just works with Google Maps). From 169, head west on West Hayden Lake Road. At the Y in the road, stay left, following the brown “County Park” signs. The trailhead is on the left and the parking lot is on the right.

Parking

We strongly encourage you to carpool the race and arrive early (Check-in is from 7-8:30 am; race starts at 9:00 am). Parking will be limited in the lot and limited on the road, so we cannot guarantee that everyone will have a spot to park in the parking lot. We will do our best, within the rules of the park, to coordinate parking and to ensure all racers have a place to park. We ask those who are near the area to consider parking close to the park and sharing a ride together to the race if possible, to allow parking to be easiest for those who are not familiar with the area.

2017 is the second year of the Frozen Feet Run. RULES

We don’t want to have to lay down the rules, but it’s inevitable that there will be issues if we don’t. We would like to avoid issues, so please read the rules. If you have any questions, please email us at info@frozen-events.com.

Frozen Feet Rules:

– BE NICE

– No littering. This applies to on course, in the parking lot, and everywhere.

– Runners must race under their own name/registration. Runners who bandit the race by running under someone else’s name and registration will not only be disqualified, but you will also never be allowed to race any of our races ever again. We’re serious.

– If you drop out of the race, you must notify a race official and/or timing.

– Racers cannot stash support including nutrition, equipment, or any other gear or items on course prior to the race.

– Headphones are allowed but we discourage the use of them.

– Strollers, dogs, bikes, skis, and other non-running items are not allowed (Snowshoes are allowed for those registered in the snowshoe division.)

– Racers can receive outside support on course during the race.

– Racers must let faster runners past when it’s safe for them to do so.

– All runners (5k, 10k, Half Marathon) must be done off the course by 1:00pm. The course will be swept at 1:00pm and anyone left on course will be ushered off.

– Racers must stay on course. Cutting the course is not permitted and really lame. Karma is a bitch.

– Be nice.

Cancellation/Weather Policy

***Registration and transaction fees are nonrefundable, including in the event of extreme weather or cancellation. Registration is not transferable to another person or another event for any reason, including injury. Competing under another person’s name will result in disqualification. In the event of poor conditions, we are held to park rules and will try our best to provide an alternate course and gathering if possible. If it’s not possible, the event will be cancelled. Due to the nature of winter racing, there is no raindate.***

The following is a list of some questions that we’ve received in the past. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Pre-Race Information

Q: Do I need to do anything before the start of the race?

A: Yes. Each racer will need to check in to get your racer bag and confirm attendance, which allows us to properly manage the race. Racers should be also come to the run prepared. Running during the cold and on snow is a different challenge.

Q: Is there a pre-race packet pick-up/check-in prior to race day?

A: Yes. There will be packet pick-ups prior to the race. The days, locations, and times are to be determined. Stay tuned to the Frozen Feet Schedule page for details.

Q: Am I required to attend a pre-race packet pick-up?

A: No. You are not required to attend. There is time before the runs on Sunday morning for you to get checked in and get your racer bag. HOWEVER, we strongly encourage that you do not wait until Sunday morning. It will likely be cold and it’ll likely be a little chaotic with people signing up and the anxious nerves that go along with it. Be one of the prepared and relaxed runners and get checked in early.

Q: If I check in at a pre-race packet pick-up, do I need to check in Sunday morning before the race?

A: Yes, but only to do a quick check of name to ensure that you’re starting.

Q: Can my friend do the packet pick-up for me?

A: No.

Q: Will I receive emails leading up to race day explaining information about the event?

A: Yes. Please watch your email inbox for emails from info@frozen-events.com.

General Race Information

Q: Do I wear my running shoes or do I wear snowshoes?

A: You make the call – you can run in shoes or snowshoes.  You can bring both and decide that morning. However, under normal circumstances, regular shoes will be the best option. If you are going to be using snowshoes, please be aware of those runners who will be passing you and let them by nicely. Please be aware of time cuts as well.

Q: What are the race distances?

A: The 5k is approximately 3.1 miles, the 10k is approximately 6.2 miles, and the half marathon is approximately 13.1 miles. Please note that these are approximate distances.

Q: Are the race distances certified?

A: No. The distances are not certified. They will be as close to the stated distances as possible given the terrain and trails.

Q: Will the course be marked?

A: Yes. The course will be marked so that you will need not need maps or gps to navigate.

Q: How do I find the finish line and/or start line before the race?

A: Directions to the venue can be found here.

Q: When should I arrive at the event?

A: If you haven’t checked in before race day, we would recommend arriving at least an hour before your race. This allows you time to get all ready and stay relaxed. Last minute rushing uses too much energy!

Q: Are there aid stations on course?

A: Yes, but only for the half marathon. There will not be any portapotties on the course – plan accordingly.

Q: What will be the food and drink at the aid stations?

A: Yes. We will have Tailwind Nutrition, water, and various snacks/fruit. Please keep in mind that items may or may not be available.

Q: This run is on snow?

A: Yes. You’re going to be racing entirely on snow.

Q: Can someone else check in for me?

A: No. You check in and get your racer bag at runner check-in as described in the timeline above.

Q: Where can I park?

A: Parking is limited. You may want to arrive early. There is a medium sized parking lot directly on site. The other parking is along the road before the gate. No parking past the gate.

Q: Are there bathrooms on site?

A: Yes, there is a park bathroom and we bring in portatoilets. They are not heated…plan accordingly.

Q: Can I stash bottles or get food/bottles/support out on course?

A: No, you cannot stash bottles on course. Yes, you can get support on course. Click for the rules

Q: Where can I find the race results?

Q: Where can I find previous year’s race results?

A: There are no results from previous years. This is the first year!

Q: Will photos be taken of the event? How can I purchase photos?

A: Yes, there will be photos taken during the runs. They will be free to you. We are personally paying a photographer so you don’t have to.

Q: Is there an awards ceremony on race day?

A: Yes, you need to be in attendance to get your award. Awards are given to the top 3 in overall and each age group.
